the group
An 8-week, closed grief group for adults who are grieving an out-of-time loss— a death that has happened too soon.
Grief has interrupted life as you know it. You may feel out of step with your peers, disconnected from the life happening around you, or left grappling with a future that looks very different from the one you had planned.
You don’t have to make your grief more palatable here. This is a place to be with those who know loss. You can expect to talk honestly about what you lost, what changed, and what comes next.

a grief process group for adults in Fort Worth, TX
What makes this group different?
when loss happens too soon
Peers
This is not a general grief group. It is a group for adults in a particular season of life — one where your peers may be getting married, having children, building careers, buying homes, and making plans for the future.
Fort Worth has some wonderful grief resources for youth, families, and faith communities. But there are far fewer spaces for younger adults grieving losses that happened well before they expected them to.
This group is for that particular experience: when someone important to you died, life around you kept moving forward, and suddenly you don’t feel like you are in step with those your age anymore. While you may have different losses, you will be in a room with people who understand what it feels like when grief happens too soon.
Experience
The group is facilitated by Kim Garrett, MS, LPC, PMH-C, owner of Spark Therapy.
Kim has spent more than a decade working in the grief community. Her approach combines psychotherapy, peer support, grief education, and experiential, hands-on work. The group will be thoughtful and intentional without feeling overly clinical or scripted.
She also knows grief personally. Her older brother died by suicide more than 10 years ago. That experience changed her understanding of grief and continues to inform her work with grieving people today.
Setting aside eight evenings to be with other grievers is a big deal. It is a commitment that allows us an important key component: time.
Eight weeks gives us enough time to get past introductions and surface-level support. We’ll talk about some of the experiences that often come with grieving earlier in life: identity, relationships, envy, anger, unfairness, milestones, the future you expected, and how to carry your loved one forward with you when life as you know it has changed.
But this isn’t an eight-week grief curriculum where everyone moves through the same topic at the same pace. There will be structure, and there will also be room for what is actually happening in the room: what members are carrying that week, what comes up between sessions, and what we discover from being with other people who get it.

Grief Group FAQ
-
Adults 22-45 who have experienced the death of a child, spouse, partner, sibling, or friend.
The common thread isn’t who died. It’s what it’s like to experience a significant loss relatively early in life, when many of the people around you are focused on building lives and futures that may now be hard for you to imagine.
-
No. Grief doesn’t have an expiration date, and sometimes the need for support becomes clearer months or years after a death.
As part of the interest process, we’ll have a brief consultation to talk about your loss, where you are now, and whether this particular group feels like a good fit.
-
Each meeting will include a combination of conversation, group processing, and occasional experiential or hands-on activities.
We will work through various themes that commonly show up in grief: relationships, identity, anger, guilt, milestones, secondary losses, the future you expected, and what it means to keep living while continuing to carry someone with you.
There will be structure, but this is not a class. What is actually happening for group members will always have room in the conversation.
-
You won’t be forced to tell a story or answer a question before you’re ready.
At the same time, this is a small therapy group. Over time, members should be willing to participate, listen to one another, and allow themselves to be known by the group.
-
No. Spark Therapy is not faith-based, and there is no religious framework or expectation for the group.
Grief can raise questions about faith, meaning, spirituality, anger at God, or changes in belief. Members are welcome to talk about their own experiences as they relate to their grief, including having no religious or spiritual beliefs at all.
-
Life happens. At the same time, this is a closed eight-week group, and consistency matters, both for your own experience and for the trust that develops among members.
Before enrolling, you should expect to attend all eight sessions whenever possible. If you already know you'll need to miss multiple meetings, a future group may be a better fit.
-
A small group works best when the people in it are a good fit for the group and the group is a good fit for them.
The consultation gives us a chance to talk briefly about what you're looking for, answer your questions, and make sure this group can offer the kind of support you need.
-
We expect to run this group twice per year, with the first cohort starting January 2027.
Exact January start date is TBD with groups planned for Wednesday evenings.
